I love this quote by Ben Okri, Nigerian Poet and Novelist.
"A people are as healthy and confident as the stories they tell themselves. Sick storytellers can make nations sick. Without stories we would go mad. Life would lose it’s moorings or orientation….Stories can conquer fear, you know. They can make the heart larger." Hypnotherapists are just story tellers. We listen to people's stories and then we find out the story they want to live and then tell it back to their unconscious minds. It's wonderful.

Okay. There are many problems with traditional weight loss programs. For one, everyone knows how to lose weight: eat less, move more. But since not many are making it work long term (less than 5% keep it off) it is clearly not about that. It's about emotional stuff. Self love, self care, stress, comfort, knowns, etc. Losing weight isn't just about forming new eating habits, although that's part of it--but even if it were, think about this: many weight loss programs make you buy all of your food from them. Sure people may eat better and have portion control and lose weight that way. But what they are really doing is creating a new habit of opening a package to eat. So when they reach their goal weight and stop buying the food, they don't have the right lifestyle habits to support their goal weight.
I just did a weight loss session today. I love this therapy the most because I see so much lasting good coming from it. Not just released pounds, but released emotional distress and new coping strategies that will have a positive effect for generations. I enjoy a clean house, but lately I've been seriously slacking. I realized that I help my clients with stuff like this all the time, so I did some self-hypnosis on myself to enjoy housework. Let me tell you. It worked. I flipped a switch somewhere and the results are hard for me to believe. I cleaned places my housekeeper has never cleaned. I moved furniture. I vacuumed under the bed. I sold stuff on craigslist. I potted plants. I did laundry. I seriously got some che flowing. The only problem was, I couldn't seem to stop. There was always one more thing that I was excited to clean. Luckily I know how to create another switch to turn it off. Whew. Lesson learned on that one.
I have been hosting a show called Hypnosis on YouTube where I moderate a panel of hypnotherapy students (past and present) who are discussing hypnosis videos that appear on you tube. It's fun. Here's a segment from our third episode. More should be coming out soon.
This year fifty million people will go on diets. Some of they will successfully lose weight. But sadly, only 5% of them will keep the weight off permanently. Why?
Everyone knows how to lose weight. Eat less calories than you burn. Right? Just like we all know how to be financially independent. Spend less dollars than you earn. Yet why do so many people struggle? Clearly it's not about knowledge. In some cases knowledge is power, but only if your unconscious mind is on board with that knowledge. The truth is that logic, intelligence, reason, decision making and will power are all part of the conscious mind, which only makes up about 10-12% of the mind. The unconscious mind, which makes up the other 88% and controls as much of our behavior, doesn't reason. It is made up of associations and knowns that form your life script. If you ever feel like you are not in control when it comes to things like chocolate cake or ice cream, it's because your conscious mind is not in control. It would like to think it is. But when 12% gets into a tug of war with 88%, the unconscious wins. In order to curb some of those habits, addictions, negative self talk, sabotage, and other things that are keeping the weight on, the conscious and unconscious minds need to be brought into synchronicity. Weight loss is one of my favorite therapies because it is so far reaching. It is not just about eating less or moving more, it is about self love, relationships, worthiness, stress, beliefs, fears, habits, motivation, and old associations with food as comfort. Some things clients should know when coming in for weight loss: Even though you may be anxious to lose weight NOW, be advised that hypnotherapy for weight loss is not an overnight magic pill. Think about all the time you have already spent over weight or losing and then gaining it back over the years. If you want to achieve healthy permanent weight loss, it needs to happen in a healthy way (about 1-2 lbs/week.) If you want to lose 25 lbs or more, you need to commit to putting yourself back on your to-do list for more than just one session. This may take extra time and energy and support, and I recommend that you come weekly for at least 2-3 months, depending on your goal weight or goal size. How hypnosis is different than other weight loss programs: Diet is just he word "die" with a "t." And exercise often has the same connotation. My hypnotherapy weight loss program is about living your life in a way that allows you to get to your goal weight and maintain it. It is about creating a joyous lifestyle where your body and mind and spirit feel good about where you are at, and living and enjoying that beautiful full life with your loved ones and friends. When people lose weight with hypnotherapy they don't just get slimmer. There is a whole life shift into greater happiness and self love. Where as, people who lose weight with other methods, such as surgery, often still fill like the fat person inside and are still plagued with the emotional issues they thought would go away once the weight was off. I work with my clients as co-creators of success, guiding them to the resources that they already have within them. We explore the emotional reasons behind weight and create a new, happier, healthier lifestyle. Our primary tool for achieving this is hypnosis, which is more powerful than will power and determination. Hypnosis works on an unconscious level to alleviate cravings, increase motivation, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, reduce fear, and so much more. Please feel free to comment or ask any questions you have about weight loss. Here's my new logo. I had an artist draw it for me. I love artists. They are in hypnosis all the time. I think it captures the joy of a life of growth.
Today I thought I'd do a video blog. My first ever. Hooray for overcoming unknowns. After watching, you may want to click here: Hypno-Writing Class.
Motivation. Some people have it. Some people feel they need more of it. Some wonder about what motivates other people--to buy things, fall in love, overeat, under-eat, work hard, exercise, succeed, fail--any number of things. There is lots to say about motivation (whole books on it) but today I just want to share a few thoughts. If you think about what motivates people or yourself, you might come up with a long list of possibles. Like this one:
Money, Sex, Pain, Duty, Love, Success, Fame, Recognition, Higher Purpose, Acceptance, Boredom, Revenge, and so on. However, these motives don't necessarily tell us the whole story. The big question that you have to ask yourself is, "Is the motivation towards or away from something?" A person may be motivated by love--but when we examine that motivation, it may be a motivation away from loneliness rather than toward a deeper connection with others. The problem with away from motivation is that it often leads to inconsistent results. For example, pain is usually an away from motivation. "Get me the heck out of this pain!" you say? You will pay anything? People in pain make a lot of promises. Pain comes in many forms (loneliness, poverty, boredom, etc). One could call these people highly motivated. However, as soon as they are a far enough distance from the pain, they become much less motivated. They begin a gradual or speedy slide backward until they are in the same or a similar situation--whether it is financial pain, relationship pain, physical pain or other kinds of pain. What happens then? If they saw an acupuncturist, they might complain that acupuncture doesn't work. If they saw a hypnotherapist, they may say hypnotherapy doesn't work. You get the picture. The difference between away from and towards motivation is that when a person is moving towards something, there is always more to work toward, so they are moving forward and getting consistent results and growth. Away from motivation is more often characterized by bursts of activity and change and then gradual backsliding. In life, however, not everything is clear cut. Sometimes under the umbrella of "success" or a goal or a virtue, a person can have mixed motivations. An artist may want to move toward creating great art, but away from doing the financial end of the business. Another person may want to move toward intimate love but away from intimate communication. You see the struggle. How is this remedied? The simple answer is hypnotherapy. The long answer will have to be another blog. I appreciate and welcome comments or questions. Did you know that Handwriting Analysis is a science that is more widely used than you know? Handwriting analysis is used by law enforcement, human resources departments, psychologists, hypnotherapists, relationship coaches and more. Handwriting is an ideomotor response, which means that it comes from the unconscious mind, and it can tell a lot about a person's behavior and personality at the time of writing. Over time, as a person's behavior or personality change, so will their handwriting.
Here are just a few of the things handwriting can reveal and some ways in which you or someone you know can take advantage of my skills as a certified handwriting analyst. What handwriting reveals There are more than 1800 traits in handwriting, but here are few of interest:
Human Resources - If you have ever hired someone, you know that you have a 50% chance of getting a good employee based on the interview alone. Some people interview well, but are flaky employees. Others who interview poorly, might turn out to be the best match in years. Many companies that are making an important hiring decision will require personality tests to ensure that they are investing in the right employee. A professional handwriting analysis report can give you pages of detailed information about your candidate and how their behavior and personality matches up with what you are looking for. Professional Handwriting Analysis (5+ page written report) starts at $250 per candidate. Relationship Strategies - If you are looking for love and don't want to waste time, money, and heartache with what can sometimes be a difficult selection process--handwriting analysis can help you get right to the heart of the matter and find a complimentary mate. I will analyze both parties handwriting samples to determine chemistry, long term compatibility, and lots more. Visual/oral analysis: $30+. Written Report: $125+ Client Relations - If you are in any form of the sales business and would like to be able to shape the behavior of your clients, you first need to understand their behavior. If you would like to know more about how to crack the code of a big client or improve your relationship, handwriting analysis can help. Price Varies. Visual/oral analysis: $30+. Written Report: $125+ Family History - Old letters or journals from ancestors are gold mines of information. Having an ancestor's handwriting analyzed can help complete the picture of who that person was, what traits you might have in common and so much more. Price varies. Visual/oral analysis: $30+. Written Report: $125+ Entertainment - If you are having a party and are tired of doing the same old thing, consider having a handwriting analysis party or a booth at your next event. Curious guests would each get a 5-10 minute on the spot analysis of any handwriting sample they write or bring. $100+ /hour. Therapy - As a hypnotherapist, being able to analyze my client's handwriting helps me to know how I can best relate to them, what they may need, and what may underlie thier presenting issues. My ability to use this tool saves my clients many sessions and sometimes years of therapy. If you are ready to make a positive change, give me a call today. *Handwriting samples do not have to be in English, so long as they are written in the western alphabet. Clients can mail me samples from anywhere and get an analysis over the phone or a professional 5+ page written report via email or mail.
